What materials can a fiber laser welding machine effectively join?

Fiber laser welding machines excel with metals including stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum alloys, copper, brass, titanium, and nickel alloys. The 1-micron wavelength is highly absorbed by these metals, allowing for efficient energy transfer. Copper and aluminum welding is particularly effective due to advanced beam modulation that prevents reflectivity issues and porosity. Dissimilar metal combinations like copper to aluminum or steel to nickel are also achievable with appropriate parameter optimization.
A Class 4 laser requires a fully enclosed light-tight safety enclosure or a dedicated laser safety room with interlocked doors. Operators must wear safety glasses rated for the specific laser wavelength. The work area must have non-reflective surfaces to prevent stray beam reflection. Fume extraction is mandatory to remove metal vapor and particulates from the breathing zone. The machine control system will shut down the laser immediately if the enclosure door is opened during operation.
A standard 1500W handheld laser welding machine can effectively weld stainless steel up to 6mm and aluminum up to 4mm in a single pass with filler wire. For deeper penetration, a 3000W machine can achieve full penetration on 10mm stainless steel. With multi-pass techniques and wire feed, thicker sections can be built up.
