How does wobble welding improve the quality of laser welds?

Wobble welding uses high-frequency oscillation of the laser spot to widen the melt pool and bridge gaps up to 0.3mm. This reduces the need for perfect part fit-up. The agitation helps gas escape from the weld pool, drastically reducing porosity in aluminum and copper welds. It also creates a smoother, aesthetically pleasing "stack of dimes" appearance and increases the effective weld width, making the joint less sensitive to misalignment during assembly.
A standard 1500W handheld laser welding machine can effectively weld stainless steel up to 6mm and aluminum up to 4mm in a single pass with filler wire. For deeper penetration, a 3000W machine can achieve full penetration on 10mm stainless steel. With multi-pass techniques and wire feed, thicker sections can be built up. The limitation is not power but the practical handling of heavy industrial joints.
